PRINCIPAL GOODS

In the most recent years, the principal goods at the Port of Itajai were: wood and its derivatives, frozen poultry (the largest exporting port of Brazil for ceramics, craft paper, machines and implements, tobacco, vehicles, textiles, sugar and frozen meat.

The activity of containers at the port needs to be pointed out. The Port of Itajai is the third one in the South of Brazil. From a movement of a little more than 26,000 T.E.U in 1990, the port reached 243,554 T.E.U in 2001. From the total of cargo that were in transit at the Port of Itajai, 84% were represented by containerised goods.

With the objective of an analysis of the representation by Itajai in the Catarinense foreign market, it should be mentioned that the port is responsible for the exportation of 1.9 billion American dollars in 2001, the equivalent to 63% of the exportations of Santa Catarina that totalled 3 billion American dollars.

The port is without any doubt, an expressive promotional agent of the economical and social development, generating direct and indirect jobs for more than 5,000 people.

Therefore, inspired on the strategic vision of being recognised until the year 2005 as the most efficient Brazilian Port in the South region and Mercosouth , the Superintendence of the Port of Itajai has tried to obtain together with the community, with labours representatives, customers and business men, the best way to administer the port.

In January 2001, it was inaugurated the Tourism Pier and the first transatlantic to anchor along side it was the Princess Danae. And yet, in November 2001, began the construction of the Containers Terminal of the Itajai Valley by Teconvi S/A, with approximately 77,000 m² and with a 250 m berth having the capacity to receive 250,000 containers a year.

Initially there were acquired seven REACH STACKERS and two MOBILE CRANES with the nominal capacity for 25 containers per hour, and in a very near future approximately US$18 million will be invested in “portainers post panamax”, new cranes to handle 150,000 containers in 12 months and successively every 60.000 containers.
