ccording to the historical records, the first studies referring to the Port of Itajai date 1905 and were realised by the "Port and Rivers Improvement Commission". The first construction begun around 1914 and it was a 700 m breakwater in the South, followed later on by the construction of another breakwater in the North. The port itself was initiated in 1938 with the construction of the first part of the docks, having 233 m length with a reinforced concrete structure and the first warehouse. In the beginning of 1950 it was built the second part having 200 m, besides the construction of a warehouse with freezing chambers used at that time for the necessities of the fishing activities.
The Port of Itajai became then, considered an organised port on the 28th of June of 1966,with the installation of an Administrative Council of the Port of Itajai, subordinated to the National Department of Ports and Navigable Routes. In 1976, with the creation of the state company Portobras, the management of the terminal started to be administered by the Port Administration of Itajai, in connection with the above mentioned state company. From this period on, it has been verified that an outstanding growth of its flow and, with the improvement of its administrative organisation, the Port Administration started to be a respected organ by the port community.
